Research Challenge and Ethics Challenge: two competitions that reveal talent

Each year, two major challenges give finance students the opportunity to test their analytical skills and judgment in real-world contexts.

During the Financial Symposium, CFA Societies Canada's Ethics Challenge took place on February 8-9, organized by CFA Québec in collaboration with CFA Montréal. This competition highlights a fundamental aspect of finance: ethical decision-making.

Congratulations to Mehdi Alishan, Charles Théroux, and Émile De Gagné from the CCESG - Comité Compétitions ESG at UQAM, who won this challenge! The award was presented to them by Jonathan Lépine, CFA, on behalf of both associations. A special shoutout to their coach, Christian Lachaussée, CFA, a CFA Montréal member, for guiding the team to success.

Next step: the Canadian final!

The Research Challenge focuses on applied financial analysis, confronting students with a real-world business valuation case. Over several months, teams from Laval University, Concordia University and HEC Montréal worked with rigor and strategy to tackle this demanding challenge.

This year, students had the opportunity to analyze Volatus Aerospace, an innovative company in aerial intelligence solutions, and present their recommendations under the watchful eye of industry experts. Managing this ambitious project alongside their studies is a true testament to their exceptional commitment.

At the local final, organized by CFA Montréal and CFA Québec on February 26 in Montreal, the winners were announced. In the presence of Jessica Morasse, CFA, representative of CFA Québec, our president, Sandy Poiré, CFA, had the pleasure of announcing the victorious team.

Congratulations to the team from John-Molson School of Business of Concordia University (KWPMP), represented by Garv Bhandari, Giovanni Di Nunzio, Eli Marchesseault, Édouard Vézina and Hannah Wang, who impressed the jury with the quality of their analysis and presentation. Their success propels them to the next stage: the CFA Institute Sub-Regional Competition, with the global final on May 5 in Chicago now in sight.

A huge congratulations to their professor Sukyong Yang, CFA, and their mentor Bryan Chan, CFA, whose guidance played a key role throughout this journey.

We also extend our gratitude to our sponsors – CDPQ, RBC, and Sun Life – and to everyone who contributed to the success of this edition: professors, coaches, jury members, and evaluators. A special thank you to Abhinav Singhvi, CFO at Volatus Aerospace, and the University Relations Committee members, Omar Mourad, CFA, Lédéenne Chapleau, CFA and Alexandre Cyr, CFA, for their commitment to supporting the next generation.

Good luck to our team in the next stage of the competition!
