The investment profession is little known and often misunderstood. Yet there is a wide range of roles, in a variety of sectors and with companies at all stages of growth, in organizations of all sizes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On March 9, CFA Montr\u00e9al and ELLE-Invest, an initiative of R\u00e9seau Capital, invited three inspiring women to talk about their profession as investors. The panelists provided an overview of the private equity industry, presenting the different professions and the uniqueness of these roles. What exactly is private equity?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The term investment capital is used to group together venture capital (Venture Capital<\/em>) and development capital (Private Equity<\/em>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Venture capital is often associated with startups<\/em> and the information and communications technology (ICT) sector. It's important to bear in mind, however, that this type of investment covers a wide range of technological sectors, such as financial technologies, healthcare technologies, green technologies, life sciences, and so on. Venture capital funds invest in high-potential companies to finance and support their growth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Development capital is more often associated with larger companies in a variety of sectors, including more traditional ones. Investors aim to increase the company's value by participating in its growth, whether through expansion of operations, entry into new markets or acquisitions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In both venture and expansion capital, investment is made from an investment fund directly to a company, but also from an institution or fund of funds to an investment fund. Rather than evaluating a company directly, they look at the track record of the fund's management, the management team in place, the investment thesis, and so on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Why take an interest in women in investment?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Even today, there are still not enough women in venture capital and development capital, whereas diversity can only strengthen the private investment sector.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When it comes to investing in a company, there are many criteria to consider. So it's not just on the basis of numbers that the investment decision will be made. Criteria such as the company's management team, the market, competitive advantage, risk, etc. are at the top of the list.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The strength of an investment team therefore comes from its ability to bring different points of view to the table, and therefore from a combination of varied experience and skills. And that's where diversity comes into its own!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And why work in private equity?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Because of the technological, unique or high-potential nature of the companies in which private equity funds invest, the job of an investor requires you to be constantly on the lookout for emerging markets and technological trends, here and elsewhere. So you have to be curious and always looking to learn more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Risk also means not just looking a step ahead, but having an exit strategy ready from the moment you invest. But patience is the key!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Do I have what it takes? How do I get started?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The profiles sought can vary greatly depending on the investment sector. It is not always necessary to have direct experience in corporate finance. Institutional investors can be a good gateway into this industry. Otherwise, nearly forty private venture capital and development capital funds are based in Quebec and regularly post positions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
